Well, I will try to catch up a bit here and then try to keep up with her! Ever since she was born, Kaylee has been a very strong little girl! She is always moving, even when she is nursing or asleep. She uses her legs and feet and arms and head constantly. It's even hard to get a posed picture of her because she won't sit still long enough. She rolled over for the first time at 7 weeks, and started "scooting" forward at 7 weeks too. Around 2 months old she would pull herself into a standing position on your lap, and lock her legs and stand there, even jumping around a bit. Now at 3 1/2 months, she is rolling over constantly-every time you lay her down she will immediately roll over onto her stomach. She will also "walk" along the floor or up your chest. She'll grab onto your hands, or you can hold her by the arms, and she will literally put one foot in front of the other, and walk. Amazing! She has been healthy as a horse, no colds or anything yet thankfully. We went for a walk in the park by our house today, and she loved it! (It's also good exercise for mommy!) She loves being outdoors, a LOT. She will look around and be fascinated for a long period of time, and concentrate very hard on what she is seeing. Her daddy and grandpa are her favorite play toys, and can always make her laugh and smile. I think I must not be as entertaining to her yet!  She is also teething, and has been since just before her 2 month well-baby checkup with the doctor.  She chews all over her hands, and anything else you put in her hands.  And drooling!  Whew.  Her hands are always wet and cold!  Well, her 3 month photos were taken last week and should be in by May 20th, so check back in-they should be cute from what I saw. :-) Of course!

Just in the last few days, Kaylee has discovered her feet. She now grabs them at every opportunity and will stare at and watch them wiggle around on her and smile. Right now she is napping-with her foot in one hand!

Today Kaylee weighed 13 1/2 pounds (in a diaper), so she's doing just fine! We went to a Mommy meeting with other moms and babies, and she had fun. There were other babies there her age, and she was the strongest one there her age, rolling around, grabbing her feet, propping up on her arms, and even doing her "walking" trick (with me holding onto her arms or hands). It was just a wonderful reminder of how grateful I am at how strong she is. She has not given us a moment of worry from the day she was born, and I am just very thankful for her strength! She loves being around other babies and will coo and talk and laugh and be very animated. She DID throw up on me at the beginning of the meeting though, and I mean big-time...down my shirt front, shirt back, in my hair, etc. So I got to walk around for 2 hours smelling like baby yak. :) It was her first time ever to do that. Her 3 month professional pictures are back in and on the website, so be sure to take a look. Today is her brother Devon's birthday, and he would be 3 years old. We took Kaylee to the cemetery with some balloons and a Mickey Mouse stake and a birthday party hat, and later had a small cake and sang Happy Birthday to Devon. We want her to know his birthday, to remember that day as his day, in celebration of his life. Of course she doesn't know anything yet, but you have to start traditions some time, right? She will know all about her big brother. Almost all her family called or sent notes today to let us know they were thinking of her brother and us today. In honor of Devon, for the second year in a row, grandma & grandpa Stants donated small bears-one for each year of his life-to our local Emergency Room, where Devon had to go a couple of times. The hospital personnel will give these bears to any infant or young child that comes into the emergency room, to maybe help them not be quite as scared during their ER stay. The hospital loves it, they tell us the babies/kids love it, and as a result, a lot of people know all about Devon and his grandparents. Kaylee's cousins sent off balloons with notes to Devon tied to them and sang Happy Birthday up to heaven, and many people from the SMA community also sent well-wishes, and several released balloons for him too. It is so wonderful that so many people don't let the day go by without letting us know they miss him, love him, and are thinking of all of us. It helps a difficult day pass just a bit easier knowing so many people are there for us. Next year I'm sure Kaylee will get a bit more out of it. :)

Awwwwwwwwwwhhhhh, what an adorable baby girl Kaylee is. Of all the photos my favorite is the one that says - "caught the end of a smile" - With her arms up so high, it looks like she is dancing!!!

Thanks Laura for all your help in doing Anna's website! It's great! It is such a nice way to communicate w/friends, family and new SMA friends.

Kaylee is doing all sorts of new things. Aside from chewing on her own toes now, she is also getting up on her hands and knees with her tummy all the way off the floor. She will also crawl forward by getting up on her elbows and knees and then pulling forward with her arms while she pushes with her legs. She's quite close to actual crawling! For 4 1/2 months, I was impressed! If you put her in a standing position somewhere like her crib where she can hang on, she can stand for short periods of time too by herself (as in without somebody hanging on to her). If you grab her hands, she will stand or even "walk" one foot in front of the other for awhile. She's been doing that stuff for quite awhile now. She's making lots of happy squealing noises and is leaning towards people with her arms out when they go to take her. I don't really think she's saying "pick me up" yet, I think she's leaning in to play with our hands. But it looks good anyway! She's sitting better too, can sit alone for a few seconds but will lean forward to grab her feet and end up on her face every time. I think if she'd leave her feet alone, she could do it much better! :) She's still sleeping and eating like a champ, and no problems that I can think of. She's a sweetie and a blessing!

We just saw all the updates on little Kaylee and is she a cutie. We are so happy she is doing so well and is so strong. We are so anxious to see you all at Mahoney. We hope you will get here early and spend some time in Lincoln before Mahoney or afterwards would be fine too. Today is Micah and Zak's birthday and they are here with their mom and dad celebrating their 12th birthday. Chris and Christie are coming for supper and we will go to Pioneer Bowl for the production of Rodger and Hammerstein's Cinderella. Grandpa Bill sends his love too. We are both doing well and send our love.

New Stuff? Well, she moves so fast it's hard to keep up on new stuff! Kaylee has this fake cough that she did constantly for a couple of weeks. Whether we were in the room or not, she would just cough and cough-all fake-just to hear the new noise. And her sweet little high-pitched squeals have now become LOUD high-pitched squeals. She does one in your ear and you are deaf for a few minutes! I'll be glad when that phase passes by! Kaylee has also managed to have her first temper tantrum, at 5 1/2 months. In a restaurant, when a paper place mat was taken away from her, she thrashed her legs, arched her back, and did that loud high pitched screech. Temper, temper! She must have gotten that stubborn streak from her dad's side of the family! :) She can move across the floor quite fast when she sees something interesting...usually electrical cords of any kind! I'm not sure why she is so fascinated by those cords, but she heads to them every time, and directing her elsewhere only helps for as long as it takes her to turn around and get back to them! (Aren't they supposed to forget an object is there if they can't see it anymore at this age??) I guess that's it for now...

First tooth noticed today! On the bottom, her first tooth is sprouting. She's eating solids real well too, grabbing the spoon and shoving it in her mouth then letting go so I can go get more food. She is very helpful! :)

Dear Mrs. Stants, I found this site while looking for info on sma. I read your stories of both your children and not only did I find it very heartbreaking but truly touching and inspirational. I can relate in some ways. You see my 7 year old Kody has sma type 2. Your boys were bueatiful boys, and the pictures I see here of your daughter are the sweetist. How is she. I just got my pc and haven't had alot of time to use it, so i'm still learning how to use it. I have wanted one for some time now just to find info on sma. I didn't really have the time to sit here this long but now that I have I'm really glad I did. I like you hope there is a cure found, if not in Kody's lifetime then in time to save another precious life. Untill then I continue to wonder what the future holds for him. And I hope and pray every day for his health and to have a miracle. I have always said that if I could I would happily give my life just to save his. Sometimes at night when I sleep I dream that he comes into my room and says "look mommy,look" and when I roll over to see him, he is standing on his own two feet, smiling from ear to ear,and holding his pillow and his favorite blanky. I just cannot let that dream get away from me. Right now Kody wears long leg baces and walks with a walker. We see doctors at Schriners hospitals for cripaled children, as well as his nuerologist on a regular basis. Not much had changed in his diagnosis (12-12-95} untill july 2000 when we discovered his left hip joint was beginning to come out of its socket because the muscles were getting to weak to hold it in. We don't have to operate however unless it begins to cause him pain, then we have no choice. We were told that kind of surgery held a vey long recovery time, which means that he would not be able to do any of his exercising or of course walking. These exercises helps to keep his upper body stong and if he isn't using those muscles you know what happens. He also recieves a flu shot every year to help keep him from getting sick. So far we have been blessed there. He did have to have his tonsils out in 98 because they were so big it was affecting his breathing and making him snore very loud. Now I have to go into his room to here him breath and I have to get right up next to him to hear him. For now we mostly face the every day challenges of raising children. We also have a 9 year old little girl, who doesn't have sma. I'm going to leave my e-mail if you would like to write me back but not sure if know how to use it right.

Kaylee has been standing up on furniture for quite awhile now, standing in her crib, standing anywhere she can stand. She'll stand by the door, the dishwasher, the TV, anywhere she is or isn't supposed to be! She still only has 2 teeth, and is growing just fine. Her latest thing is to make little *Smack* noises with her lips, like a kiss. It's quite cute! She has also balanced on her feet several times without holding onto anything at all! She's a cutie!

First, I am a goober because I just tonight realized that there wasn't a link for anybody to add an entry, and apparently it's been that way since November. *Duh*. Anyway, it's back.

Second, I am sitting here in the dark at the computer going over Kaylee's pictures from her first year of life. I can't believe she is a year old today...it seems unreal, like time has flown by whether you want it to or not. I look at her photos and see her brother Devon's mischievousness, stubbornness, and sweet little smile, all mixed in a package all her own. What a Beautiful baby girl you have.!! I have a 1 year old G-daughter diagnosed with SMA 1 in FEB 2002 when she was 7 months old. She turned 1 on 6/24/02. My heart breaks for what your family has been through. I cherish every moment with our precious Saria and can't even imagine what it was like for you (I can say I understand what you have gone through) but cant believe the heartache you went through to get your beautiful baby girl. I believe the God sent you this beautiful angel to love and cherish all of her life. Saria is just so precious. She had aspiration pneumonia one month ago, came through it (after we gave her Morphine to ease her pain... which was not an easy decision.) This week had pneumonia again but her mommy and daddy caught it early and used the "coughing machine", the breathing treatments, etc. without use of Morphine. We still are able to swallow very good, and eats about every 2 hours. I think we are looking into a feeding tube soon (something we hoped to avoid) but we just cant let her "dwindle before our eyes" No bipap (i think we are lucky in that respect) So I must again tell you what a very precious baby girl you have!! I work for a Doctor in Woodward, Oklahoma, and have been working in the medical field for over 30 years, (have never, ever, heard of SMA) But our precious baby has this terrible disease and we will fight "to the end" to save her. I would like to hear more about this very beautiful girl you have. I would like to send you Saria's webpage sometime if you would like to email me back.
